You may have noticed that your social media’s feeds in recent times have been bombarded with videos. Not just user videos being shared but sponsored video advertising. Just last year, between April and November the number of video views on Facebook doubled to 8 billion. Is that per year? No, that’s per day. If we assume an average length of one minute, after which most videos have lost almost half their audience, then that’s 15,000 years of video consumed on a daily basis. These numbers are astonishing so it just makes sense that these platforms have turned to video as it’s newest advertising income stream.
Marketers and advertisers are trying to get in on that, not just because that’s where the customers are going, but because video is far more effective than other forms of advertising. So here are some more facts about advertisings’ new kid on the block:
- Reach: 50% of mobile traffic is video
- Conversion: Shoppers are 1.81 times more likely to purchase if they watch a video
- ROI: 52% of Marketing professionals say video has the best return on investment
- Future: 74% of all internet traffic in 2017 is predicted to be video
Running in place
The problem is that this means if you want to stay relevant, you have to stay up to date. This is what is called a Red Queen problem. Remember her from “Alice through the Looking Glass”? She had to run really fast, just to stay in place.
In the same way, marketers have to familiarise themselves with dozens of new software platforms. For example, Facebook’s new package Canvas creates absolutely stunning visuals, which are both engaging and interesting. People even maintain it is intuitive and logical to use!
Though you’ll notice it’s only those with a degree in design who are saying that kind of thing. For those who prefer communicating without emoji’s the interface can appear slightly daunting. The thing is, that’s only one of the major platforms and it’s only for mobile devices. What’s daunting to marketers and business owners a like, is that every single social media platform has their own system/s with which you need to familiarise yourself. It’s getting more and more difficult to keep up!
So what if you don’t run? That might not be such a good idea either. Studies have shown that being online with outdated approaches might actually be damaging your credibility. In other words, if you’re not going to try and stay up to date you may be better off going offline entirely. Yes, that would mean losing out on all the powerful marketing opportunities available online… not to mention that nowadays for most people if you’re not online, you don’t exist.
There is another option. Have a specialist do it for you.
